Our Story

Our Crew at Habitat for Humanity

New City Media was started by David Poteet in 1995 with the crazy (at the time) notion that the Internet was really about communication, not just technology. Humans making connections with each other and building communities unrestricted by geography. In essence, creating a “new city.”

From the beginning, our quest has been to understand how people behave online. What are their goals? What motivates them to click? Why do they remember some things and not others? What delights, surprises, engages them? Even more, what moves them to act?

We’ve discovered that there are two main elements that make all the difference:

Story. Your story is your path to someone’s imagination. Our brains are hardwired to take hold of stories and make them our own. People will never voluntarily take an action they have not first imagined taking in their mind. When I hear your story I can’t help picturing myself in it. As more people feel a connection to you and your story, you’ll see an increase in clicks, contacts, registrations, orders or applications.

Story is ultimately YOUR big idea, the strategy that drives every decision you make.

Design. Yes, there are successful ugly sites out there. But research shows that people make intuitive judgments about your credibility and professionalism in the first 4-8 seconds, based mainly on aesthetics. And we hate ugly anyway.

Great design is more than just pretty though. A true designer shapes every aspect of the experience. Drawing intuitive navigation and screen flow is just as much “design” as creating the graphics. We never know quite what to call it – “user experience architecture” is the closest we’ve come – but we know how to make it happen. The underlying framework, when built on an understanding of how people really think and behave, makes engaging visual design possible. Without it, frustration eclipses any surface beauty.

All of which leads to Impact. A story brought to life through beautiful and intuitive design will…

  • Extend your reach
  • Delight your customers and constituents, and prompt them to tell others about you
  • Cut wasted time and frustration out of your operation
  • Attract the best people (employees, students, partners)
  • Accelerate your sales process
  • Build your brand
