Mobile Apps and Websites

Google is forecasting that mobile traffic to your website (from smartphones and tablets) will pass traffic from desktops and laptops by 2015, and searches by 2013. If your site is like others we know, your mobile traffic has tripled or quadrupled in the last year.

And Flurry, a leading provider of analytics for mobile, reported in 2011 that time spent with mobile applications has passed time spent on the web. Use of smartphones and tablets is exploding.

NewCity has invested heavily in our mobile capabilities over the last several years - both in our understanding of how to plan and design for mobile, and in our ability to build solid mobile applications and websites. We launched our first mobile-optimized websites for a number of clients including Roanoke College and Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in 2009. In early 2010 we spun out a subsidiary company, Nomad Mobile Guides, offering a platform for destinations to launch native iOS and Android apps alongside mobile-optimized websites. Through Nomad we’ve developed the official mobile app for Yellowstone National Park, the Great Smokies National Park, and the Black Hills and Badlands of South Dakota and Santa Cruz, California among many others.

Of course the same person who uses your website from a laptop on Tuesday may be looking up something on your site from their Android phone that weekend. It’s often the same person interacting with you across all of these formats. The mobile and desktop web experience need to be conceived as a whole.

Rebekah Godshall to Present at Eduweb 2012 on Managing Responsive Design

One of the hottest topics in web development today is the idea of "responsive design" – building a site to respond appropriately to any screen size from desktop to tablet to smart phone. It's revolutionizing our approach to development – almost every site we're building today is responsive.

Future Friendly Thinking & The Myth of Mobile Context

As we do our own research and planning for clients' mobile efforts, we learn a tremendous amount from our peers. So many myths are prevalent in mobile strategy today, it helps to have solid research to counter people who rely on hunches or personal anecdotes to guess how other people will behave.

Top 5 Reasons Why I Love Designing for Mobile

This past year I've spent a LOT of time exploring, concepting, wireframing and directing the creation of experiences for mobile devices. Some of that has led to our spinout company, Nomad Mobile Guides. The emergence of mobile apps is the most exciting time I've lived through since the birth of the web in the early 90's.

Here's why I love…
