Dave Perks

Senior Writer

Dave remembers the exact moment at which he decided that he wanted to be a writer. It was a warm spring day during his sophomore year at Virginia Tech. The scent of mountain wildflowers was all around as Dave reclined against the enormous trunk of an oak tree. He was reading On the Road, and napping peacefully between chapters with only the soft quack of happy ducks in the pond nearby to arouse him from his slumber. When at last the sun was too low in the sky for him to read on, he slowly rose to his feet with the resolution that, one day, a student just like him would recline at that very tree while reading his words on a page.

Actually, none of that’s true, but it’s a pretty good piece of writing, don’t you think?

The truth is much more normal. Dave wanted to get into advertising and knew he couldn’t draw or design his way out of a stick figure seminar. So, since 1996, he’s been writing for agencies in DC, Atlanta and Baltimore. In the summer of 2006, he also published the book, USMC, which is an overview of recent Marine battles, technology and organization.

Outside of work, Dave still likes to write. He’s always wondered why it is that a lot of chefs say the last thing they want to do when they get home is cook. If you’re doing what you love to do, why stop just because you’re at home? Granted there’s more to life than writing. That’s why Dave loves spending time with his wife and kids, playing golf, reading books while leaning against oak trees, and writing about himself in third person.
